DR DAVID EDIS

Dr David Edis is an Orthopaedic and Spine Surgeon based in Melbourne. David’s main interest is in the management of adult spinal conditions. He has a particular expertise in less invasive techniques to manage spinal deformity. David utilises mini-open lateral surgery (or OLIF) and posterior robot guided percutaneous screw placement, which can reduce blood loss and perioperative risks and recovery times for patients having spinal fusion surgery. David has extensive experience in all facets of spine surgery from simple to complex, covering cervical to lumbo-pelvic conditions. He is an active researcher and medical educator and believes in lifelong learning in clinical practice and is constantly updating his skills and helping other surgeons to update skills.

APPROACH TO PATIENT CARE:

David believes in a multi-disciplinary approach to patient care and works closely with primary carers, pain specialists, physiotherapists, clinical psychologists, nurses and occupational therapist to achieve evidence based contemporary care for patients with spinal conditions. David sees surgery as only one part of the solution for patients and encourages them to seek further information about their conditions to ensure they can make an informed choice and, when appropriate, pursue non-operative treatments and self-management before making a decision to have surgery. He encourages supervised rehabilitation for all patients who undergo surgical treatment and follows patients for 12 months or longer to track outcomes.

Mr David Owen

David Owen is an Australian trained orthopaedic surgeon specialising in hip, knee and shoulder surgery.

He went to school in Gippsland, studied Engineering and Science at The University of Melbourne and then completed Medicine at Australian National University. Following his orthopaedic surgical training, he completed a fellowship in orthopaedic trauma. He is completing a PhD in orthopaedics on wrist surgery.

David is interested how technological applications in surgery can improve patient outcomes and has completed training in robotic assisted joint replacement. He also performs hip replacement with the anterior approach.

David is keenly interested in research and has also published a number of scientific papers in orthopaedics and continues to be involved in teaching doctors and medical students.

David lives in Gippsland with his wife and young children and is keenly interested in sport particularly mountain biking skiing,  kayaking, nature and the environment.

Mr Malcolm Thomas

Malcolm Thomas is an Orthopaedic Surgeon with over 30 years experience. He has been working in Gippsland since 1994, operating at Maryvale Private Hospital, Latrobe Regional, and West Gippsland Hospitals, and more recently, Central Gippsland Hospital. He has a practice which treats both adult and paediatric patients for elective and trauma surgeries. His interests include complex hip, knee, shoulder, foot and ankle procedures.

He graduated from Monash University with Honours in 1983, completing his residency at Prince Henry’s Hospital, Melbourne. His orthopaedic training was undertaken at The Royal Melbourne, Royal Hobart, Box Hill and The Austin Hosptials. He completed  fellowships in foot and ankle surgery in Baltimore, USA in 1992, and at The Cleveland Clinic, Cleveland Ohio, USA in 1993. Mr Thomas continues to expand his knowledge by regularly attending conferences, both domestically and internationally. He also visits the operating rooms of renown surgeons from around the world, including the  USA, Northern Ireland, and France.

Mr Thomas has recently completed nine years on the Board of Examiners in Orthopaedics, which involves examining trainee doctors to become fully qualified surgeons under the auspices of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons. He is passionate in teaching junior doctors, and won the 2019 award for outstanding teaching, given by the Victorian branch of the Australian Orthopaedic Association.

Mr Thomas is trained in the Navio robotics-assisted total knee replacement offered at Maryvale Private Hospital.

Personal interests include family, marathon running, travel, reading and cooking. He also loves his pet dog, Sebastian.

Mr Ilan Freedman

Mr Ilan Freedman is a Melbourne and International Fellowship-trained Orthopaedic Surgeon specialising in Direct Anterior Minimally-Invasive Hip Replacement and Patient-Specific 3D-printed Instrument (PSI) Partial and Total Knee Replacement.
Mr Freedman trained as an Orthopaedic Surgeon in Australia and then received a prestigious scholarship from the European Federation of Orthopaedics and Traumatology to undertake fellowship training at Clinique du Sport in Paris, France with leading international hip surgeon, Dr Frederic Laude.

Mr Freedman also completed a second international fellowship at the internationally renowned Hip Preservation Unit in Warwick, UK where he was involved in the treatment of professional athletes, such as English Premier League footballers and Olympic Athletes.

Mr Ben Brooker

Mr Ben Brooker is a Gippsland local, having grown up in Warragul; he completed his schooling in Warragul and Drouin prior to undertaking medical training at The University of Melbourne. He graduated in 2005 with the combined degree of Bachelor and Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) and Bachelor of Medical Science (BMedSci).

Ben completed specialist Orthopaedic training in Victoria and Tasmania, receiving his Fellowship in Orthopaedic Surgery from The Royal Australasian College of Surgeons in 2015.  He then went on to travel to Canada to undertake further specialist training in primary and revision hip and knee replacement surgery at the QEII Hospital in Halifax, Nova Scotia.

In 2016, Ben and his family returned to Gippsland, settled in Yarragon, and commenced work at Gipppsland Orthopaedic Group.

In addition to his clinical practice, Ben holds a keen interest in teaching. He is the Director of Training at the Latrobe Regional Hospital for the Australian Orthopaedic Association, and is responsible for the education and supervision of Orthopaedic Registrars in their training positions. Ben’s educational interests extend to doctors-in-training; he also conducts tutorials for medical students on rotation from Monash University. Ben has also completed a number of research projects through his training and career, has presented at national and international conferences and published his research in peer reviewed international journals.

Ben has a special interest in primary and revision hip and knee surgery, sports injuries and ACL reconstructions. He holds public appointments at Latrobe Regional Hospital in Traralgon, West Gippsland Hospital in Warragul, and at Gippsland Southern Health Service in Leongatha. His private practice is conducted at Maryvale Private Hospital.

Mr Ben Brooker holds a Fellowship from the Royal Australian College of Surgeons and is a Member of the Australian Orthopaedic Association. Outside of work, Ben enjoys spending time in his vegetable garden, on the tractor and playing with his children.
